Two players, one 8x8 board, 64 two-sided discs (dark on one side, light on the other). The game starts with four discs in the centre, same colours on a diagonal (d4 and e5 light, e4 and d5 dark), and Black moves first. A legal move must flank one or more enemy discs in a straight line — row, column or diagonal — and every flanked disc flips. If you have no legal move you pass; if both players pass in a row, or the board is full, the game ends. More discs wins; empty squares left at the end are scored for the winner.

By the common convention used here, empty squares left at the end are awarded to the winner, so final scores always add up to 64 — for example 33–31 from 32–30 with two empty squares.

A disc in a corner can never be flipped because no line passes through it, so it is permanently stable. The squares diagonally next to corners (X-squares) are dangerous for the same reason: taking them often gives the corner away.
